The name

满堂花醉三千客
一剑霜寒十四州

Guanxiu (832–912), poet-monk of the late Tang

A hall abloom with flowers, three thousand guests fall sweetly drunk;
one sword, cold as frost, holds fourteen provinces.

The name comes from the most famous couplet in a poem by Guanxiu, poet-monk of the late Tang — the two lines above.

The first line is a room — flowers scenting the air, the house full, the host drinking and trading learning with scholars, cups passing, music in the background. The second line is the man: fourteen provinces held by a single blade. Tenderness taken to its limit, and martial force taken to its limit, in fourteen characters — the portrait of a host open-handed enough that the guests never stopped coming.

Two lines, cut together like a montage. Outside these walls each of us plays a role; at the table we drink and let the scores settle themselves. By day life runs in a straight line — by night the jianghu, the old world of wandering swordsmen, runs alongside it. That is the whole idea behind coffee by day and cocktails by night.

By day, a café full of sunlight and plants

Floor-to-ceiling windows on the street, greenery everywhere, light falling across the wooden tables. Hand-drip, espresso and signature coffees; the house special is an Apple Guava Americano. Quiet enough that people bring a laptop and stay the afternoon.

By night, a cocktail bar that takes its drinks seriously

After six the lights go down and the backlit wall of triangular panels behind the bar comes up. Craft cocktails first — a list with a point of view, every drink arriving with a little card — and a back bar that leans toward single malts. About twelve tables and eight bar seats; no reservation, no minimum spend, open until 2 am.

Open every day from 9:30 until 2:00 the next morning. It runs as a café from 9:30 to 18:00 and switches to cocktails at 18:00.
